As we get older, our risk for loneliness and social isolation increases, which can have serious health consequences down the line.
According to the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), about 25% of seniors aged 65 and older are considered socially isolated. Seniors are likely to face loneliness when they live alone, have lost family and/or friends, are diagnosed with chronic illnesses, or experience hearing loss among other medical conditions. These risk factors make it difficult for seniors to engage in social activities and stay connected with others.
The National Institute on Aging also states that loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of many health problems including high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline.
Depression is not considered a normal part of aging and negatively impacts our quality of life. It’s important to reach out for support when you need it and to remember you are never alone in your struggles.
If you or a loved one have feelings of prolonged sadness or anxiety for weeks on end, you may want to consider seeing a health care provider for a diagnosis and potential treatment.
Symptoms of depression include:
These signs of depression in senior citizens may also indicate other underlying health conditions. Speak to your primary care doctor to determine the cause and how you can manage them.
Some seniors experience an improvement after taking antidepressants and going to regular therapy sessions. The Area Agency on Aging is a network of over 600 organizations that will provide life-saving information about nutrition and meal programs for older adults and seniors.
If you or a loved one is in crisis, it is recommended to call 911 or the toll-free, 24-hour Suicide & Crisis lifeline 988 to speak to a counselor.
Loneliness can take a heavy toll on seniors, but there are many ways and opportunities to find people to connect with and company you enjoy when you feel lonely.
Find support groups for lonely seniors either online or in person where you can meet new like-minded peers who can empathize and share advice.
Attend local events and community spaces such as the library or parks daily or weekly. Take part in physical activities like joining a dance or fitness class. Consider volunteering or finding other ways to contribute to your community.
Schedule frequent phone or video calls with friends and family. There is a world of people waiting for you if you’re willing to go after them.
