10 ways to help prevent skin cancer


Summertime means spending time in the sun, perhaps at the beach or the pool. And if you’re going to be out in the sun, you should make putting on sunscreen a priority. In the summer the UV rays are much stronger, which makes it easier to get sunburned. If you’re not careful it could lead to developing skin cancer. Below are 10 ways to help prevent sunburn and lower your risk of getting sink cancer.

  1. Wear Sunscreen
  • This may seem like a given but you’d be surprised how often people forget to apply or even bring sunscreen with them when they spend some time in the sun. Make sure that when you’re heading outside to apply sunscreen and bring the bottle with you to reapply throughout the day. Use a sunscreen of at least SPF 30, which screens out 97% of the sun’s harmful UV rays.
  1.  Stay in the shade
    • When going to the beach or being outside, avoid direct sunlight. Stay in the shade for part or all of the time.
  2. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before stepping outside.
    • Applying the sunscreen before going outside will help you not to forget it.
  3. Reapply the sunscreen every 2-3 hours
    • Just because you applied it at 10am doesn’t mean you’re good for the whole day. It is important to remember to keep applying it regularly during the day.
  4. Do not use tanning beds; cover up when outside
  • The UV radiation emitted by tanning beds can cause serious damage to your skin.
  • If you sit in the sun, wear a hat to keep the sun away from your face, eyes and scalp.
  1. Get an annual checkup
    • Going to the doctor to get your skin checked yearly is ideal
  2. Examine yourself after a day in the sun
  • Look at your skin after you shower. If you did get burned, wait until the redness goes down to check yourself. If you notice anything unusual be sure to call your doctor.
  1. Wear clothing that is protecting your skin
    • Wearing a tee-shirt in the ocean or pool can help protect you from the sun’s harmful rays
  2. Don’t forget about your lips
    • Buying a lip balm with SPF of 10 or more will help prevent your lips from getting sunburned. The lips are VERY sensitive to the sun.
